Alaska's Majestic Mountains

Alaska is filled with mountains as far as the eye can see from almost anywhere in the state. It is no wonder then that the U.S.'s 49th state is home to the highest mountain in North America.

In a land of high mountains, Mt. McKinley in central Alaska, towers over all, making its neighbors appear small in comparison. At 20,320 feet high, McKinley is not as high as Mt. Everest in the Himalayas, but still high enough that it earns its name of Denali. Athabaskan natives called the mountain Denali or "the Great One." It was given the name McKinley in honor of William McKinley who was running for president of the United States in the late 1890s. Today the names McKinley and Denali are used interchangeably for the mountain.

Alaska's mountains stretch for hundreds of miles to the west, arcing out into the North Pacific Ocean, where they are known as the Aleutian Chain.

First Time in Brisbane

This was my first time in Brisbane, as a backpacker nonetheless, and Brisbane knows how to welcome backpackers to its hip city. We stayed at the Brisbane Backpackers Hostel. We selected this resort because it of its close proximity to many of the attractions in Brisbane, most within walking distance. These attractions include the Southbank, Brisbane Convention Centre and The City Centre. Additionally, the Brisbane Backpackers has a courtesy bus that runs hourly to the Roma Street Transit Centre and the Central Business District. The best part of the bus is that it is free!

Surf The Best Beaches Worldwide

There are so many great options around the world when it comes to surfing. Every year someone finds a new beach in some remote territory. That beach then becomes the next big thing. While those beaches might get the spotlight for a little while, there are three beaches that have been at the top of surfers' lists for years, and in one case, almost a century.

One stretch of beach that is relatively recent on the scene is Tamarindo, Costa Rica. This is by far the best option in Central America. The weather is phenomenal, the locals are friendly, the waves are amazing, there are world class resorts and small hotels wherever you turn, and everyone is looking to make you happy on the service side.

If you're looking for a specific beach to go to in this area, consider Little Hawaii or Witches Rock. The waves in these locations can reach as high as nine feet. Just make sure you use caution. Another option halfway across the globe is Jeffreys Bay in South Africa. This is otherwise known as J-Bay. It's only a few hundred miles from Cape Town. The Billabong Pro is hosted here every July at Supertubes Beach. The waves at Supertubes are known to be extremely predictable and reach as high as ten feet.

The third and most obvious option is North Shore, Oahu, Hawaii. This is also known as Wild Water. There's a twenty mile stretch of beach where waves can reach as high as thirty feet. The Bonzai Pipeline and Waimea Beach are the most popular options.
